Notes: GREAT-GREAT GRANDPARENTS OF PRESIDENT CALVIN COOLIDGE
Israel was the son of Adam Brown Jr. and his wife, Priscilla Putnam. He was born November 2, 1781, in Moultonborough, NH, according to Ancestors of American Presidents (however, this conflicts with his 1850 census entry, which indicates his birthplace was MA). Israel married Sally Briggs October 7, 1799, according to the same source. Israel and Sally married young, and a song has been written about them. They had about a dozen children. According to his tombstone inscription at Tyson-Pollard Cemetery in Vermont, Israel died November 9, 1867, age 86 yrs & 7days. There is conflicting data for the date of Sally's death. Ancestors of American Presidents list her death date as June 10, 1869, whereas the US GenWeb database with the Tyson-Pollard tombstone inscriptions lists two Sally Browns -- one of whom they indicate was the wife of Israel, listing her death date as July 31, 1826, age 41 (an error, since she was still alive in the 1850 census). The other Sally Brown tombstone inscription death date is December 22, 1866, age 86 yrs, 3 mos, 26 days. That date is a conceivable match for Sally, who was born circa 1785, per the 1850 census. Hamilton Child's Gazetteer and Business Directory of Windsor County, Vermont, for 1883-84 mentions that "Adam Brown, the first town clerk, came here from Massachusetts at a very early day. His granddaughter, Mrs. [Martha Lovina Brown] W.H. Sawyer, now resides here upon the farm her father, Israel P. Brown, occupied for more than sixty years."
