Notes: Joseph Reese Fairfield was the son of Joseph M. and Mary (Howe) Fairfield. He was born October 31, 1829, in Jacksonville, Morgan Co., IL, according to a family Bible in the possession of a descendant. On March 16, 1864, he married Florinda Young, as recorded in the Illinois state marriage records for La Salle County. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Kansas, where daughter Mary was born in April 1865. Sometime after September 1871, when daughter Alice was born in Kansas, the family moved to Indianapolis. Joseph died there January 12, 1884, and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.
