Notes: William was the son of William and Anna (Fairfield) Whiting. His father was a prominent businessman and politician in Massachusetts. William Fairfield Whiting followed in his father's footsteps, participating in the family's successful paper mill in Holyoke, as well as serving as Secretary of Commerce under Hoover in 1928.
